The Newton Metrowest Travel Basketball program plays competitive basketball (4th through 8th grade) in the Metrowest Basketball League which includes 79 towns and over 1000 teams. We stress teaching basketball skills, sportsmanship, and fun in a competitive basketball league environment. Newton typically offers a higher and lower division team in each age group. Additional teams are added as space permits. Players who live in Newton or attend Newton schools through the METCO program are eligible. Players must play in the grade that they currently attend.

Due to Covid, the start of the 2020-21 season has been delayed. The Metrowest Basketball League is tentatively planning a reduced 8 game season plus playoffs, with games starting in January. Regulations have not been finalized, but it is likely that games will be played without spectators and with all attendees (including players) wearing masks. All protocols will follow state and MIAA regulations (not yet issued) for high school basketball. Additional protocols will be in place for practices in Newton including no parents or visitors in the gym except for coaches, hand sanitizing, each player bringing own ball, facemasks, no contact/skills focused practices, social distancing, marked water bottles, only one team in the gym at a time, etc.
In Newton, we will be very limited this year by our ability to obtain game and practice space. In addition, for safety reasons we will be unable to offer tryouts. Therefore, we are planning the following modified program for this year only:
No 4th grade teams.
One team of up to 12 players in 5th-8th grades (8 teams total).
One practice per week (Monday-Thursday) starting on December 7.
We understand the problems associated with not having tryouts but do not want to risk a large number of players in the same gym. Our plan is that those age groups where there was a clear 2019-20 Black team would first offer a roster spot to returning players. Any open roster spots would then be offered to players on last year’s Orange, Blue or White teams. This is not perfect and we know that.
Players who elect not to play this year because of health concerns will not be penalized in future team selections. This should be a decision that each family makes on their own. We hope to be back to something approaching normal for tryouts and teams in the fall of 2021.
If you wish to play and have not heard from a coach by October 23, please contact Lenny Gentile (boys) or David Wanger (girls) and you will be referred to the appropriate coach.
